Reading first-week cohorts in consumer apps

Day-1 retention alone rarely tells you who your newcomers are. First-week paths reveal the segments that onboarding should respect.

First-week cohorts often hide three arrival stories: people who arrive with a clear task, people who browse after a social tip, and people who install then wait for a quieter moment.

We encourage teams in Thailand’s consumer category to separate these paths before judging retention. Mixing them averages away the group that actually needs a different first prompt.

Look for the second meaningful action, not only the second open. For a food-ordering app that might be saving an address; for a reading app it might be finishing a short piece.

Once paths are visible, write a segment for each arrival story and attach one onboarding change—never three. Overloading the first session recreates the blur you just removed.

Revisit the week-one map after a major acquisition channel change. New ad creatives often shift the mix of arrival stories faster than product can notice.
